The first hour is the real answer

Doors open at 8.30am year round. The 8.30 and 8.45 slots are consistently the calmest of the day, and in July and August they are the difference between walking through the Great Gallery and queuing inside it.

Months that fill

July and August are the peak, with the days around Christmas, New Year and Easter close behind. Late autumn and the stretch from mid-January to March are the quietest, and the palace keeps its shorter 5.00pm winter close then.

Seasons change the gardens, not the rooms

The interior is the same in February as in July. The grounds are not — the parterre is planted for summer, and the Gloriette walk in low winter light is a different and emptier experience.

Avoid arriving at midday

Mid-morning to early afternoon is when the coach groups and the school parties overlap. If a morning slot is gone, the last ninety minutes before closing are a better bet than the middle of the day.
